The Southern Mansion
at The George Allen Estate
History & Tours
In 1863 George Allen, an extremely successful Philadelphia businessman, had the
master of nineteenth century architects, Samuel Sloan, design and build for him
what is still the grandest and most significant of all of Cape May's mansions, "The
George Allen House".
The house has outrageous carved moldings, 14 foot gold leafed pier mirrors,
elaborate marble fireplaces, original gaslight chandeliers and a ballroom where Mr.
Allen held parties to entertain the elite of Philadelphia. If Cape May had continued
to produce mansions of this opulence level, she would have rivaled Newport.
To celebrate her revival, restoration tours will be held on the history, architectural
significance, and ongoing restoration.
